Some commonly asked questions
Do I get a statutory warranty on a used car in Queensland?
Yes, depending on the age and mileage of the vehicle, licensed QLD dealers are required to provide a statutory warranty:
Class A Warranty: Applies to vehicles less than 10 years old with under 160,000 km on the odometer. It covers you for 3 months or 5,000 km (whichever comes first).
Class B Warranty: Applies to vehicles 10 or more years old, or with 160,000 km or more on the odometer. It covers you for 1 month or 1,000 km (whichever comes first). (Note: Motorcycles, caravans, and commercial vehicles are exempt from these statutory warranties).
Is there a cooling-off period if I change my mind after a purchase?
Yes. When you buy a used car from a licensed QLD dealer, you are entitled to a 1-business-day cooling-off period. This gives you time to sleep on the decision or arrange an independent mechanical inspection.
The period typically ends at 5:00 PM on the dealer’s next business day.
If you cancel the contract during this time, the dealer is legally only allowed to keep a maximum of $100 from your deposit.
Keep in mind: If you drive the car off the lot (other than for a test drive or to take it to a mechanic), you void the cooling-off period.
Do I need to organise my own Roadworthy (Safety) Certificate?
No. In Queensland, a licensed dealer cannot offer a registered vehicle for sale without already having a valid, approved Safety Certificate (commonly known as a roadworthy certificate). The dealer handles this inspection before the car is ever listed for sale, ensuring it meets QLD’s strict safety standards.
Are on-road costs like stamp duty and registration included in the advertised price?
In Australia, if a dealer advertises a car with a “Drive Away” price, it must legally include all on-road costs. This means the price you see includes the vehicle cost, stamp duty, transfer fees, and any remaining registration. If a car is advertised as “Excluding Government Charges” (EGC), you will need to pay stamp duty and registration fees on top of the listed price.
How do I know the car doesn’t have finance owing or a bad accident history?
When you buy from a licensed QLD dealer, you are legally provided with a Clear Title Guarantee. This means the dealer guarantees that the car has no outstanding finance (money owing from a previous owner) and has not been stolen. Additionally, dealers must declare if a vehicle is on the Written-Off Vehicle Register (WOVR) before you purchase it.
